MUST Delegation from Artificial Intelligence Cross Disciplinary Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine Visits Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó da Federação das Associações dos Operários de Macau
On 12 June, a delegation led by Dean Kang Zhang from Artificial Intelligence Cross Disciplinary Research Institute, together with Associate Professor Io Nam Wong and Assistant Professor Wing Fai Mok from Faculty of Medicine, visited Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó da Federação das Associações dos Operários de Macau for an exchange visit. The visit aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the nursing home’s current operations and to exchange views on the challenges, practical needs, and future development of elderly care services.
During the visit, the delegation was received by Ms. Iok Leng Wong, Deputy Director of the Nursing Home, along with social worker Wai I Leong, floor supervisor Rong Chan, and dietitian Tat Wa Chan. They introduced the nursing home’s general background, service scope, and the practical needs involved in elderly care. The nursing home also shared a number of challenges currently faced in the provision of elderly care services, including the growing demand for care, the coordination of care processes, health management for residents, emotional support, and the delivery of individualized care arrangements.
The two sides then engaged in in-depth discussions on innovative models of elderly care and exchanged views on the potential roles of artificial intelligence tools, digital systems, and art therapy in nursing home settings. During the discussion, participants explored the application prospects of artificial intelligence and digital systems in areas such as health data management, optimization of care workflows, daily monitoring, risk alerts, integration of service records, and improving care efficiency. These approaches are expected to help enhance both management effectiveness and service quality within nursing homes. At the same time, both sides discussed the value of art therapy in promoting emotional expression among older adults, strengthening social interaction, providing psychological support, and enhancing quality of life, noting that these areas hold considerable promise for further exploration and practical implementation.
The visit deepened the understanding of MUST’s research and teaching team of the current situation and practical needs of local elderly care services. It also provided valuable insight for future interdisciplinary collaboration and for integrating artificial intelligence technologies, digital management, and healthcare services. Both sides expressed their hope to strengthen future exchanges and to actively explore more innovative solutions tailored to the actual needs of older adults, thereby contributing to the enhancement of elderly care services in Macau.
MUST has consistently placed strong emphasis on interdisciplinary integration across artificial intelligence, medicine, and social services, and is committed to promoting the translation and practical application of research outcomes. Looking ahead, MUST will continue to foster exchanges and collaboration with local healthcare and social service institutions, advance research related to smart health and elderly care, and contribute to the development of a healthier city and to efforts addressing population aging in Macau.
